Satellite Trail Destinations
From LctaWiki
There are a number of locations ("destinations") in Linn County that are nearby an existing trail, but not close enough that it is obvious that a trail is within a short walk. For such locations, it would be beneficial to have signage both along the trail (pointing toward the destination), and at the location (pointing toward the trail). In this way, the trail system can be "virtually" connected, without the cost of actually putting the trail in.
An example of this could be Tucker Park in Hiawatha. Tucker Park is within a few blocks of the Cedar River Trail, but it would probably be fairly easy to miss that proximity. Consider these two signs, the one on the left along the trail, and the one on the right at Tucker Park parking lot. (Of course the layout and color scheme of the signage is notional only.)
[edit] Connectivity
It is important to consider the connectivity between the trail and the destination. Is there any kind of sidewalk? Is it a lightly traveled roadway? Is the route complicated (are there any turns in the route that aren't marked?) Is it a busy street? If the connection includes a busy street or busy intersection, it may not make the greatest satellite destination.
[edit] Distance Limits
How far away can a destination be from the trail and still be considered a "satellite"? The limit can be flexible, but a 5-10 minute walk is probably a good guideline.
[edit] Potential Satellite Destinations
If you can think of other locations that would make good "satellite destinations", add to the list here.
