Wiki FAQ

This web site is structured as a "wiki". This allows for anyone to easily add or improve content on the site. We hope by using this format that more people will become involved in reading and writing to these pages, so that in the end more people in the community will know more about what's going on with trails in Linn County.

But before that goal can be met, we realize that there is a learning curve with using this kind of a website. Some of you may be familiar with Wikipedia -- we use the same software, so the same editing patterns apply. For the rest of you... keep reading.

Wiki Usage

Account Creation

First, we recommend that you register and create an account. If you do not have an account and are not logged in, each wiki page will have a "Log in" link in the top right corner. Click that link, the create a new account.

Whenever you plan to edit a page, first log in, so that your changes are marked with your username. (Otherwise, changes will be marked with your computer's Internet address, and if there's any question about the changes you make, it's better to be able to get in touch with you about them).

Editing Pages

You can edit any page you see on this site by clicking the "Edit" button at the top of the page. Editing a page is a lot like typing an email -- just text entry -- but there are some special symbols used to denote lists, font styles, tables, etc. We highly recommend you read the Wikipedia syntax guide to get up to speed. Note that this LCTA wiki site is not related to Wikipedia -- we just reference their syntax guide since it is fairly comprehensive and we use the same software.

When you are creating new content, feel free to be as elaborate or as simple as you'd like. But if you're changing existing content, make sure you understand how to use the existing formatting correctly. You can always click the "Show Preview" button to see how your changes will look without actually committing your changes.

When you are happy with your changes, add a few words to the "Summary" box indicating a synopsis of what you changed. This will make it easier to track what has changed over time on each page. Then click "Save Page" to commit your changes.

Page History

Any user at any time can see the history of changes to the current page by clicking the "history" link at the top of the page. This will show who has made changes to the page, and on what date. If you see any questionable content on a page, check the history, and if a questionable edit has occurred, edit the page to remove the questionable changes, and alert the Wiki Admin.
